I stand firm in my assessment of Donald Trump. He is a traitor, a term that barely captures the extent of the harm he has inflicted and continues to inflict on our nation and the world.
In a previous post, I shared my military experiences and the decade I spent in Europe alongside our NATO allies. This bears repeating. For ten years, I served with allied soldiers, diplomats, civilians, and elected officials. It was clear that our allies respected the American people and the United States, confident that we would stand with them in defense of democracy. They trusted their own countries' commitment to the alliance in securing democracy, not only in Europe but globally. Our allies' soldiers have stood and continue to stand with American soldiers in peace and combat, forming a unified team of patriotic soldiers defending democracy at every turn. This unity was shattered yesterday, to our nation's detriment.
Yesterday, I witnessed Donald Trump, in a single disgraceful display, dismantle these alliances by supporting Vladimir Putin and attempting to demean an American ally. This ally is fighting for his country and democracy against a ruthless dictator who has invaded his nation and committed unspeakable atrocities. Never have I witnessed such a treasonous act by anyone, let alone the President of the United States.
Our Congress and Senate, under Republican control, stand idle or actively assist in the destruction of our democracy by a would-be dictator, supported by billionaire oligarchs who prioritize power and wealth over democracy and humanity.
I have consistently highlighted the sacrifices made by American soldiers, sailors, and airmen in defending our country and Constitution. I have described the experience of watching friends and comrades, American soldiers all, give their lives and spill their blood on foreign soil.
Imagine juxtaposing this sacrifice with the scene in the Oval Office yesterday. It was evident that the two men criticizing Mr. Zelenskyy lacked any understanding of the sacrifices made by him and his countrymen, let alone those of their own countrymen. It was also clear they did not care.
I find myself questioning daily what has happened to Americans that allows them to view Donald Trump's actions as anything but morally reprehensible. What has led us to accept the actions of a morally bankrupt, racist, misogynistic criminal? Are we so discontent in our lives that we believe someone like Donald Trump can improve them? Do we truly think that someone who would deprive the most vulnerable of food and medicine would enhance our lives? Do we believe that a person who would destroy the livelihoods of thousands of hardworking Americans, our neighbors, friends, and family, would make our lives better?
As a human being, I cannot and will not condone the actions of those currently controlling our country. Their actions are appalling, reprehensible, and inhumane! They seem driven by hate, greed, and a lust for power and wealth, with no concern for their fellow human beings, much less Americans.
